Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest

These two pieces were done for Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, the site of one of two retreats designed and built by Jefferson himself. Now standing as a museum, the people of Poplar forest restored the grounds and continue to provide seminars and activities for the cultural and educational benefit of the public. The first is a poster for a regular event called “Conversations” in which actors take the roles of Jefferson and Madison and play out an evening of discussions and shared experiences as colleagues and revolutionaries. I took a playful angle with the imagery and presented the event as a talk show. The second piece is a flyer for a lecture on the role of enslaved craftsmen during that era, and the impact they had on the architectural and artisanal zeitgeist. The imagery is supposed to implicate a “peek” into the lives of the hidden, and often overlooked, workforce of the time.
